Lead Man Mark Miller
Signs Professional Sports Contract
Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown has signed a player contract with the Continental Basketball Association's (CBA) Ft. Wayne Fury. The CBA is the official developmental league for the NBA. This makes him the only multi-platinum artist in any genre of popular music to have a professional sports contract.
Long known for his athletic prowess both on and off the basketball court, Mark has been a regular at celebrity basketball game charity events. He fits basketball practice into his daily schedule, even during Sawyer Brown's infamous grueling road schedule. In fact, he is often asked to warm up with NBA teams like the Utah Jazz when the band visits Salt Lake City. At home in Nashville, Mark can be found on his regulation size NBA court --- perhaps one of the few that was built around a cow pasture. Though only 5'9", Mark's determination and discipline eared him a spot on the University of Central Florida varsity squad when he attended the school. That same discipline enables him to play professional basketball while maintaining a successful music career.
As the official developmental league of the NBA, the CBA recorded more than one million in attendance during the 1996 season. Eight seven former CBA players appeared in the NBA during last year's seasons 25 of which appeared on the '96 NBA playoff roster. The 11-team league began pre-season practice last week and Mark attended practice at the Fury's Camp in Ft. Wayne. Commenting on Mark's signing, team owner Jay Fry said, "I was looking for a short point guard that could dance and Mark's the best I've ever seen."
